Net metering allows a solar system owner to export surplus electricity generated during the day back into the national grid, in exchange for a credit on their monthly electricity bill. A bi-directional meter records both the units imported from the grid and the units exported to it.
In Pakistan, net metering is regulated by NEPRA and implemented through each area's Distribution Company (DISCO). The process generally involves submitting a load and system design application, a technical feasibility review, site inspection, execution of a net metering agreement, and installation of the bi-directional meter.
At the end of each billing cycle, if a customer has exported more units than they imported, the surplus is typically carried forward as a credit rather than paid out in cash, depending on current DISCO policy. This makes correctly sizing your solar system — not oversizing it purely for export — an important part of getting the best return.
